Red Eye, Black Eye and Dead Eye
Drip coffee with espresso added. One shot is a red eye, two a black eye, three a dead eye, and the naming gets more honest as it goes.

Ingredients
Note: The drip coffee is most of the drink, so it has to be good. A shot of espresso does not rescue stewed coffee, it just makes more of it.
Method
-
Brew the drip coffee properly
Weigh it: about 14 g of coffee for 220 ml of water. Most of what you are about to drink is this, so the usual drip machine advice applies.
-
Pour it into a large mug
Leave room for the shot. A 300 ml mug is about right for a red eye and you will want more for a dead eye.
-
Pull the shot into it
A double straight into the mug. Stir once.
The crema will disappear immediately, which is fine. Nobody is making this one for the aesthetics.

Why this works
This is a caffeine delivery drink and it is worth being straightforward about that. A 220 ml mug of drip coffee carries roughly 130 mg of caffeine and a double shot adds about 120 mg, so a red eye lands near 250 mg. A black eye is closer to 370 mg and a dead eye to 490 mg.
For context, health authorities in the United States and the European Union both put the general adult guidance at around 400 mg a day. One dead eye exceeds that on its own, before anything else you drink. That is not a reason nobody should make one, but it is a reason to know the number.
The flavour logic is real as well as chemical. Drip coffee is a long, lightly extracted drink with a thin body; espresso is short, concentrated and heavy. Combining them gives a mug-sized coffee with far more body and a darker, more roasty character than filter alone, which is why the drink persists in diners rather than being a pure novelty.
The names are American and the usage is inconsistent, which is worth knowing before ordering. Shot in the dark means the same as red eye in much of the country. Some regions reverse red eye and black eye entirely. Saying how many shots you want removes the ambiguity.
Variations
- Shot in the dark: another name for the same drink in most of America.
- Lazy eye: made with decaf espresso.
- With milk: a splash turns it into something much closer to a long, strong latte.

Questions
How much caffeine is in a red eye?
Around 250 mg: roughly 130 mg from the drip coffee and 120 mg from the double shot. A black eye is near 370 mg and a dead eye near 490 mg, which is above the 400 mg daily guidance most health authorities give.
Red eye vs black eye?
The number of shots. One for a red eye, two for a black eye, three for a dead eye. Usage varies by region, so saying how many shots you want is safer than using the name.
What is a shot in the dark?
The same drink as a red eye in most of the United States: drip coffee with a shot of espresso added.
Does the drip coffee quality matter?
Yes, more than people assume. It is around 85 percent of the volume. A shot of espresso adds body and strength but will not hide coffee that has been sitting on a hot plate.
